Izumi Hall was planned and constructed
as part of the 60th anniversary project of Sumitomo
Life Insurance Company and opened in April, 1990.
In pursuit of creating an ideal sound field, the Hall
was modeled after the “Grosser Musikvereinssaal (Musikverein
Main Hall) in Vienna”, home of the Vienna Philharmonic.
It is a shoebox style concert hall with 821 seats.
With acoustics, elaborately considered not only through
the design of the ceiling and walls but also the floor,
chairs, and 8 chandeliers, a space filled with a confluence
of instruments has been realized.
The reverberation time is between 1.8 and 2 seconds,
which is regarded as the best time for classical chamber
music.
Izumi Hall is equipped with distinct instruments, that
cannot be fully appreciated in other halls, such as
a pipe organ produced by Koenig Company (France) whose
merit is a bright, soft sound, and a pianoforte, produced
by Nanette Streicher in the 1820s, contemporary
with Beethoven.
With Tadashi Isoyama (Professor of Kunitachi College
of Music) as the musical director, Izumi Hall sponsors
about 30 original performances each year.
Izumi Hall was incorporated into Sumitomo
Life Social Welfare Services Foundation on
November 1st, 2001.
Sumitomo Life Insurance Company established this Foundation
in 1960 in order to contribute to various social welfare
projects.
The Foundation deals with businesses that support nursing-care,
medical examinations, and non-profit organizations.
In the future, as a member of this Foundation, Izumi
Hall will develop various social contribution activities
further through wide distribution of diverse, high quality
music. |
